Espresso Machine Delonghi EC155 Review

For a lot of people, it’s hard to imagine even getting out of bed without knowing that world-class cup of Joe is waiting for you easily enough to make a right at home without having to grab a cup on your way to school or the office.

At the same time, not all espresso machines are created equally. Some do a passable job at pumping out black sludge that could be called coffee (if you closed your eyes and help your nose) whereas others like the DeLonghi EC155 can elevate your coffee experience to entirely new levels.

With a legendary Italian legacy and reputation for producing high-end espresso making machines, you are in the best of hands with the DeLonghi EC155 system.

Below we dig a little bit deeper into everything that this system has to offer and highlight some of its shortcomings so that you can decide if this is the espresso machine you want sitting on your counter permanently.

Let’s dive right in!

DeLonghi EC155 Quick Overview

Right out of the box, the DeLonghi EC155 comes ready to make world-class espresso and cappuccino drinks with next to no headache and hassle eliminating a lot of the finicky behavior in so many other similar espresso machines.

This espresso machine also does a pretty solid job at brewing up a traditional cup of American coffee, but if you’re looking for something that is as full-featured as what you might find at a high-end café (or even your local Starbucks) you’ll probably be left a little bit disappointed.

The DeLonghi EC155 platform is simple, straightforward, and easy to use but it isn’t quite as feature-rich as some of the real top-tier coffee systems, including the more expensive options from this particular manufacturer.

What you will be happy with, however, is the overall build quality and user-friendliness of this system.

To begin with, the “heartbeat” of this espresso machine has to be the stainless steel boiler mechanism.

A lot of other similarly priced and similarly designed espresso machines from other manufacturers do not feature a stainless steel boiler set up, and because of that their capabilities and their consistency really suffers. You won’t have to worry about that being a problem with the DeLonghi EC155 platform.

Water is going to heat quickly, evenly, and consistently and it isn’t going to taste “off” the way it might have if it was boiled inside of plastic or synthetic components.

As mentioned above, you are going to be able to make great cups of espresso and cappuccino without a lot of extra effort right out of the gate. The whole platform has been designed with newbies in mind, helping you to make the most of these extractions style beverages without a lot of fuss and without a lot of training.

Sure, this newbie first focus does mean that you aren’t going to be able to manually tweak or adjust certain elements of the DeLonghi EC155 as much as you might have been able to with other (much more expensive) espresso machines but most people aren’t going to need that kind of flexibility.

This is a true “point and shoot” kind of platform, that’s for sure.

You are also really going to appreciate the layout of the controls of the DeLonghi EC155 setup.

Unlike a lot of other espresso machines that compete directly with the DeLonghi EC155 you won’t find all kinds of buttons, dials, bells, and whistles like you might on a supercomputer. Instead, all of the controls have been streamlined down to a single knob system that lets you “set it and forget” your coffee really quickly without compromising on the quality of the finished results.

A lot of folks worrying about whether or not this machine will be capable of extracting maximum flavor from the beans you are using can put those fears away. The DeLonghi EC155 has 15 bars of pressure (a pretty decent amount for a home espresso/cappuccino machine), more than enough to squeeze every drop of flavor out of your favorite beans and grounds.

The self-priming mechanism means that you don’t have to sit there and toil away with a bunch of finicky systems just to get a cup of coffee rolling in the morning, and the ability to use ESE pods with the DeLonghi EC155 is another huge advantage that saves time in a big way.

Mixing the swivel jet frother, dual function filter, and easy cleanup components and it’s not hard to see why so many people have already fallen head over heels in love with everything that the DeLonghi EC155 brings to the table.

Delonghi EC155 Pros

One of the biggest advantages of the DeLonghi EC155 compared to nearly every other similar coffee machine at this price point has to be the automatic nature of this system versus the sheer amount of manual “grunt work” that every other option necessitates.

When we say that the DeLonghi EC155 is a set it and forget it kind of system we really mean that. There’s not a lot of steps needed to move through to get your coffee going in the morning, and you can expect a world-class cup of espresso or cappuccino ready to go inside of about 5 to 10 minutes from start to finish.

Best of all, you don’t have to stand around and babysit this espresso machine while it makes your cup of coffee, either.

This brand has a legendary reputation for producing really high-end pieces of coffee making equipment, and this very consumer-focused machine from them is no exception. It may not have the same build quality or the same premium components from top to bottom like their commercial options (that cost a whole lot more) feature but it still has premium components where it matters most and a fit and finishes you won’t find with a lot of other manufacturers.

Combine all of that with the ease of cleanup, care, and maintenance that the DeLonghi EC155 makes possible in this quickly becomes a no-brainer kind of purchase for those that want great coffee in the morning without a lot of fuss.

Delonghi EC155 Cons

One of the biggest limiting factors of the DeLonghi EC155, and one that we really would have liked to see included, has to be the omission of a dedicated coffee bean grinder.

Sure, an independent grinder isn’t all that expensive and the odds are pretty good that if you are really passionate about coffee you already have a grinder that you’d like to use on hands. All the same, it would have been nice to see this kind of “must-have” accessory included right out of the box.

On top of that, the limited control you’ll have compared to some of the higher-end espresso machines with is pretty noticeable after you’ve had a year or two with this machine and want to start experimenting with different kinds of coffee beverages.

But the DeLonghi EC155 is very upfront and honest about the kind of coffee system it is an espresso machine for beginners so we really don’t hold it against it all that much.

How quickly can I make a cup of espresso with the DeLonghi EC155?

From start to finish, you should be able to make a cup of world-class espresso inside of 5 to 10 minutes and sometimes a whole lot faster than that. This really does simplify and streamline the espresso (and cappuccino) production process more than maybe any other espresso machine on the market today.

Can I make more “advanced” cups of coffee with this unit?

If you are used to Americano coffee exclusively (the kind of coffee available at places like Dunkin’ Donuts, local gas stations, and office coffee pots) then yes you’re definitely going to be able to make more complex and more “extraction” focused cups of coffee with the DeLonghi EC155.

If, on the other hand, you are looking to go beyond the world of espresso and cappuccino and really unlock your inner barista, the odds are pretty good that you are going to find the DeLonghi EC155 to be at least a little bit limiting later down the line.

Do I need special types of coffee to run this machine?

You can use pretty much any coffee grounds you want to with this machine, though obviously you’ll get better results making espresso and cappuccino with beans that have been specifically ground very finely and intended to be brewed into these kinds of beverages.

As we highlighted earlier, though, this system does work with ESC pods if you are in a real hurry which streamlines and simplifies the coffee production process pretty significantly.

What kind of warranty does the DeLonghi EC155 include?

This manufacturer behind the DeLonghi EC155 machines is one of the most reputable in the entire coffee system industry, a smaller organization operating out of Italy but one with a legendary reputation for customer friendliness, high build qualities, and standing behind the products that they produce.

As a general rule, all of the products from this manufacturer carry a two-year warranty across the board (though independent reviews online show this company goes out of their way to help outside of warranty timelines whenever possible).

Final Verdict

When you get right down to it, if you’ve been hoping to make great espresso and cappuccino at home but find a lot of the espresso machine systems a little bit daunting to operate with all of their buttons, levers, and settings than the DeLonghi EC155 is going to be right up your alley.

Simplifying and streamlining things considerably, it’s never been easier than it is with the DeLonghi EC155 to make world-class espresso and cappuccino almost immediately whenever you want with these great pieces of equipment.
